Kanye West has a ton of hits, but it’s crazy to think about what might have been. Now it seems that Ye was supposed to have a popular song that Drake and Future took on instead.
Future’s “WAIT FOR U” single, which features Drake and Nigerian singer Tems, earned him his first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 as a lead artist last month. However, the song almost ended up in the hands of another rapper.
“WAIT FOR U” co-producer ATL Jacob claimed in the latest interview with B High Atl that Kanye West liked the beat and recorded it. However, he failed to finish it recording.
“What’s crazy is before ‘WAIT FOR U’ came out, that was one of [Kanye’s] favorite songs. He was like, ‘Man, this record crazy!’ So we was trying some stuff on it but you know, we just ain’t get to the point where we actually finished ‘WAIT FOR U.’”
Interestingly, ATL Jacob was well aware that the song would be a hit for Future, despite the fact that the Dungeon Family alumnus avoided it whenever they were in the studio together. Future didn’t share his love for that track until they were recently at Drake’s place.
“We were talking the other day when we were at Drake’s house, and he said he skipped it because he knew it was one of his favorites. He said he listened to that beat every day for a month straight … and he knew what he was going to do to it. A long time went by like, six or seven months. So I was like, let me try the beat with another artist, since he ain’t like it. Then he called me and said, ‘Hey, don’t ever get this beat out to nobody else. I got a crazy song on it.’”
Although Future, Drake, and Tems’ song “WAIT FOR U” went platinum, ATL Jacob’s time in the studio with Kanye West wasn’t wasted. The producer co-produced “Pablo” and “Keep It Burnin” on DONDA 2, the latter of which was also included on Future’s I NEVER LIKED YOU. Stay tuned to Thirsty for more updates.
