LeBron James founded the I Promise school in his hometown of Akron, Ohio to give local kids a better chance at success. The school serves underprivileged youth who grew up in similar situations to his own. I Promise has been performing magnificently given its rising test scores and happy student body.
Tragedy recently struck the area when a 17-year-old boy was killed in the parking lot of the school’s outdoor basketball court. TMZ reports that a fight broke out on Thursday evening. Unknown suspects assaulted the young man for unknown reasons.
The victim’s friends called 911 as soon as they could. Unfortunately, the boy died at the scene. The three suspects are believed to have been playing basketball on the court, which bears LeBron’s name.
LeBron James’ foundation issued a statement on the incident. It was noted that they are devastated by what happened on school grounds. LeBron also tweeted a brief message of condolence for the victim.
“[May] the heavens above watch over you during this tragedy! Pray for our community!”
Akron Public Schools also released a statement that called the victim a leader at the Firestone Community Learning Center. He was also involved in the design academy. LeBron James must now sadly mourn this tragic loss.
