Shakira is known as the “Queen of Latin Music” renowned for her musical versatility. Her relationship with Gerard Pique has previously been rumored to be on the rocks. The couple just confirmed the rumor that was going around.
According to Hollywood Life, Shakira and her partner Gerard Piqué are splitting up after 11 years together. On Saturday, June 4th, the international singing phenomenon and her Spanish soccer star partner announced their separation. “We regret to confirm that we are separating,” the couple said in a statement released by Shakira’s public relations firm.
“For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you for your understanding.”
They first met on the set of Shakira’s music video for the World Cup song “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” in March 2011. Rumors of a breakup enveloped the couple recently when the Spanish news source El Periodico said Gerard had left the family home in Barcelona and was living alone. Shakira’s latest single, “Te Felecito,” may have added fuel to the fire.
“For completing you I broke into pieces/They warned me, but I did not pay attention. Do not tell me you’re sorry, that seems sincere, but I know you well and I know you lie.”
Although the couple kept their relationship very private, a guest appearance by Shakira on the podcast Planet Weirdo with Holly H in February may have hinted trouble was on the way. The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer stated that she and Gerard disagreed over punctuality.
“My poor husband, slash boyfriend, slash baby daddy, whatever you want to call him, he has to wait up for me so long. He’s tired of waiting up. Cause Colombian time is not the same as Catalonian time, Spanish time.”
