Morbius has become a running joke among movie fans. The Jared Leto-led, Sony-produced Marvel vampire flick had a dismal showing among reviewers upon its initial release. After the movie became a meme for being so bad, the short-sighted execs at Sony decided to jump on the bandwagon and re-release the film hoping to capitalize on the online frenzy.
That strategy did not work. The earned about $163.4 in gross earnings at the box office on its initial release, but negative word-of-mouth and a horrendous 17% score on Rotten Tomatoes have ruined any chance to save its reputation. The re-release was met with yawns rather than dollars.
According to The Numbers, Morbius pulled in just $85,000 in 1,037 theaters during its re-release this weekend. That makes for a paltry $82 per theater. It seems Sony’s gamble didn’t pay off.
An online push for Sony to produce a sequel to Morbius made the film go viral. That doesn’t mean anybody wanted to sit through it. Fans pretended to be upset by the poor showing, which somehow studio higher-ups didn’t realize was a form of mockery and not flattery.
Whether Sony was embracing the joke or was oblivious to it, Morbius has been an absolute disaster. The handful of fans who were serious about wanting a sequel will likely be disappointed. Vampire Jared Leto just can’t cut the box office mustard.
The movie, while based on a Marvel property, is not an official part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That, coupled with the relatively obscure choice of subject matter, kept audiences away. We will see if Sony ever lets Morbius back out of the coffin again in the future, but it does not look likely.
