Netflix has been struggling to stay relevant lately. After seeing subscribers decline for the first time in a decade, the streaming giant needed a big boost. Other services like HBO Max have been creeping up on the company, and another major hit was needed to get people interested in Netflix once again.

Many expected that to come from season four of the hit series, “Stranger Things.” The highly anticipated and frequently delayed new episodes finally dropped last week. The latest season is already a huge hit.

Variety reports that fans watched Stranger Things season four for a record-breaking 287 million hours in its first weekend. That puts it at the #1 position as the most-watched show on Netflix. All four seasons of the supernatural coming-of-age drama landed in this week’s top five.

The incredible viewership numbers smashed the previous record set by the second season of “Bridgerton.” During the week of March 21-27, Bridgerton scored 193 million hours of viewership in its first weekend. That made it the second most-watched Netflix English language TV series premiere ever.

Stranger Things 4 not only broke Bridgerton’s record, but it also obliterated it. The new high water mark eclipsed the previous mark by over 50%. Netflix has to be thrilled with those results.

Volume 2 of Stranger Things 4 is set to debut on July 1. There will be two feature-length episodes bringing things to a conclusion. The fifth and final season is yet to enter production, but Netflix has to be encouraged by the early returns on season four.
