Riverdale Actor Ryan Grantham Killed His Mother & Planned To Target Justin Trudeau

Ryan Grantham, famous for his roles in Riverdale, Supernatural, iZombie, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid is making headlines for a totally different reason. He killed his own mother and planned to drive to Ottawa to do the same to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Following the death of his 64-year-old mother, Barbara Waite, Grantham pled guilty to second-degree murder on March 9th in a British Columbia Court. According to an autopsy report, Waite died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Crown prosecutor Michaela Donnelly said, “He put the crosshairs on the back of her head, closed his eyes and pulled the trigger.”

According to court records obtained by Complex, Grantham had been suffering sentiments of self-loathing, depression, and a desire to perpetrate violence in the months preceding the murder. Donnelly revealed that Grantham was concerned that his mother would find out about his low academic performance and marijuana use.

Grantham had videotaped himself on a GoPro camera the day of the murder, showing the crime scene and recounting the events. He reportedly went out to buy beer, and marijuana and later went off to sleep.

According to the admission of facts read by the Crown, Grantham shot his mother in the back of the head on March 31st, 2020. Grantham piled three firearms, ammo, 12 Molotov cocktails, camping gear, and a printed Google map with directions to Rideau Cottage in Ottawa into his car the next day.

Grantham addressed his plot to assassinate Prime Minister Trudeau in both a statement to police and portions given out in court from his private diary.

Justice Kathleen Ker of the British Columbia Supreme Court cited the material in her sentence arguments. Ker also heard that Grantham had also pondered mass murders including one at Simon Fraser University, where he was a student.

Grantham began driving east but he turned himself in at Vancouver police headquarters at Graveley Street. According to Donnelly, police immediately arrested Grantham after he said, “I killed my mother.”

On April 1st, his sister, Lisa Grantham, discovered their mother’s body. After being unable to contact her mother or brother, she came home worried. Lisa Grantham stated in her victim impact statement that the murder wrecked her life and career. She also added that her mother, who was battling cancer, was her greatest friend.

Lisa revealed to the court, “It breaks my heart she struggled so hard … only to be murdered by her own son. She was vulnerable and Ryan gave her no chance to defend herself. It pains me to know he was a danger to her life.”
