Paul Haggis is a Canadian screenwriter, film producer, and director of film and television. He is best known as screenwriter and producer for consecutive Best Picture Oscar winners: Million Dollar Baby and Crash, the latter of which he also directed. Haggis was recently arrested in Italy following heinous assault allegations.
On Sunday, June 19, Italian authorities detained Paul Haggis on allegations of serious physical harm and sexual assault. A lady has accused the Crash director of rapping her over the course of two days in Ostuni, in the Apulia area of Italy. According to THR, her name has not been made public, and she has only been characterized as “foreign” to Italy in recent press stories.
The woman was left alone at the Papola Casale airport on Sunday morning, June 19, while suffering from precarious bodily and psychological circumstances, according to police files filed by Italian authorities. She was taken to the hospital by airport staff and local cops, where she was treated.
She also formalized her complaint and cited circumstances that were subsequently investigated for confirmation by investigators, according to the report. Haggis was in Ostuni to teach multiple seminars at Allora Fest, a film festival that runs from Tuesday, June 21, through Sunday, June 26. This isn’t the first time the filmmaker has been charged with heinous acts.
As previously revealed by Radar, the Million Dollar Baby writer was accused of sexual misconduct by at least four more women in 2018, with two of them claiming he raped them. “I need to be inside you,” he allegedly told one of the alleged victims, prompting her to flee.
Mr. Haggis completely refuted previous unnamed charges. In a culture where one of a person’s fundamental rights is to confront an accuser, that right has now been eviscerated when it comes to anyone accused of sexual assault in the press. The representatives for Haggis have yet to issue a formal statement in response to the most recent allegations.
