Father of the Bride is a 2022 American romcom film directed by Gaz Alazraki and written by Matt Lopez, based on the 1949 novel of the same name by Edward Streeter. HBO Max is celebrating the debut of their Latinx-led Father of the Bride revival. The new ‘Father of the Bride’ remake set a new record.
Modern viewers are likely to be more familiar with the 1991 remake and its 1995 sequel. The remake stars Steve Martin and Martin Short. However, the original 1950 Father of the Bride with Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor was one of the year’s top-grossing films.
The comedy also produced its own sequel. Andy Garcia plays the titular father, Gloria Estafan plays his wife Ingrid, and Adria Arjona from Emerald City plays the bride-to-be. The reboot has now become the streamer’s most watched streaming-only title release.
According to Deadline, HBO Max’s biggest ever streaming-only movie launch was the new Father of the Bride remake. Furthermore, in the first four days after its June 16 release, the film was the most popular title on HBO Max around the world. Based on its first four days, the streaming-only project ranked in the top ten most-watched titles on HBO Max in Mexico.
Meanwhile, The Batman is the most-watched theatrical release on the platform for a film that was not developed particularly for the platform. Of course, Father of the Bride isn’t the only Steve Martin film that has been given a streaming-only makeover. Disney+ debuted its own adaptation of the 1950 and 2003 family film Cheaper By the Dozen, starring Zach Braff and Gabrielle Union, earlier this year.
HBO Max, on the other hand, appears to have performed significantly better with their own Father of the Bride remake, despite mixed reviews for the Disney original. With an HBO Max record under its belt, only time will tell whether this latest Father of the Bride revival, like its predecessors, will receive its own sequel.
