Leonardo DiCaprio is nothing else if not comfortable in front of a camera. Leo is one of Hollywood’s most highly acclaimed actors and always looks at ease on television or the silver screen. It’s no surprise, then, that he offered a major presidential candidate some help during the 2020 campaign.
Lis Smith was a political strategist and former communications director for Pete Buttigieg’s 2020 presidential campaign. She told TMZ that Leonardo DiCaprio offered a private coaching session with Mr. Buttigieg before a 2020 debate. The conversation took place during a star-studded private fundraiser for Pete in 2019.
Smith said Pete appreciated the support from A-listers like Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom, and Ashton Kutcher. It was Leo who stepped up to try and help. While Pete wasn’t aware of DiCaprio’s place in pop culture, Leonardo pulled him aside to explain.
DiCaprio told Mayor Pete that he would help him with his speaking style. He also offered tips on the best way to deliver his talking points during the debate. Lis Smith was very enthusiastic about the offer.
Pete didn’t even bother to get Leonardo DiCaprio’s number at the fundraiser. The coaching session never did wind up happening. Pete still performed well in the debate, increasing his national popularity significantly.
It is surprising to hear that Pete Buttigieg wasn’t interested in Leonardo DiCaprio’s help. If anything, it makes Buttigieg seem out of touch. Ultimately, it didn’t matter, as Joe Biden soon took control of the race for the Democratic nod on his way to the White House.
