The Kardashian family never fails to grab attention, even if it’s the Instagram CEO. After Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian criticized modifications to Instagram’s algorithm, the social media giant declared that it would abandon attempts to make it more like its main rival at the moment, TikTok.
Instagram first suggested changing its algorithm to include more video content from external accounts rather than simply a user’s friends and pages they follow. Since Facebook lost users for the first time this year, the decision was probably made in response to pressure from Meta to perform.
“I’m glad we took a risk. If we’re not failing every once in a while, we’re not thinking big enough or bold enough.”
But we definitely need to take a big step back and regroup. [When] we’ve learned a lot, then we come back with some sort of new idea or iteration. So we’re going to work through that.”
Among the many people who criticized these modifications were Kim and Kylie. They posted a story that read, “Make Instagram Instagram Again. Stop trying to be TikTok. I just want to see cute photos of my friends. Sincerely, Everyone.”
Moreover, their dominance over social media has been repeatedly demonstrated. Most significantly, Insider stated that Snapchat’s stock dropped by nearly 8% after Jenner stopped using the platform because of a redesign. Therefore, Snapchat lost more than $1 billion in revenue.
Therefore, it makes sense that Instagram is taking action to keep its largest users happy. The app is attempting to hold onto the young audience, who are more inclined to use TikTok and adjust to the interests and audiences of the rapidly growing sensation. With 656 million active users, TikTok surpassed Snapchat’s ad revenue last year and is predicted to surpass YouTube’s by 2024. Stay tuned to Thirsty for more updates.
