Brittney Griner has been struggling for many months after being incarcerated in Russia. While the WNBA player has been constantly trying to get the U.S. government’s attention, she finally got the good news. However, Donald Trump thinks saving her didn’t have to be a United States responsibility.
Griner was arrested after being charged for drugs. He got the support from many public figures who called for her release and support from the government. While the Biden administration is willing to trade her for Russian arms dealer, Viktor Bout, Donald Trump thinks she isn’t worth it. Viktor Bout is also known as The “Merchant of Death.“
Donald Trump spoke on the matter during an interview at The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton. He thought that the trade-off between the player and a dangerous arms dealer kinda is an unfair deal. The former POTUS harshly criticized the player, even implying that she is the one who’s at fault.
She went in there, loaded up with drugs, into a hostile territory where they are very vigilant about drugs– and she got caught. And now we’re supposed to get her out — and she makes, you know, a lot of money, I guess. We’re supposed to get her out for an absolute killer– one of the biggest arms dealers in the world. Killed many Americans. Killed many people.
The billionaire went even further in his criticism. While she was already in huge trouble, Trump thinks that she shouldn’t have admitted it at all, and questioned her ability to even resist the allegations.
She knew you don’t go in there loaded up with drugs, and she admitted it. I assume she admitted it without too much force because it is what it is, and it certainly doesn’t seem like a very good trade, does it? He’s absolutely one of the worst in the world, and he’s gonna be given his freedom because a potentially spoiled person goes into Russia loaded up with drugs.
Trump made these statements after the U.S. took a step towards securing a deal. The deal also aims to get the release of both Griner and former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova did reveal that the talks between the two sides have taken place. However, we would have to wait before anything substantiative comes out of it.
