Update: Brittney Griner was found guilty of possession and smuggling. No sentence has been handed down as of this update.
Original: Brittney Griner was arrested for possession in Russia, because she had a prescribed THC cart in her bag. Now she might spend the next decade in Russia.
Russian prosecutors don’t care about Griner’s medical marijuana status one bit. MSNBC has confirmed that they are seeking a ridiculous sentence of 9 1/2 years behind bars for getting busted with something that is considered medicine where she came from.
Griner’s cries for help largely fell on deaf ears in America until celebrities joined her crusade for freedom. Since then, she has remained a focal point for Americans as many wish for her freedom.
There were talks of trading Griner for someone Russia wants that the United States has in custody. Sadly, people like Donald Trump, who is still free, have spoken out against this idea, because he doesn’t think it’s a fair trade to give an arms dealer for a WNBA player who was caught with a THC cart.
A court in Moscow has not ruled on this request, but it was made during closing arguments. A verdict in the case is expected soon, and we will update this article when the news breaks.
