The country still doesn’t learn after decades of civil rights protests and legislation. That being said, the Anchorage Police Department doesn’t like that their own cops joke and take selfies with potentially impaired drivers who flash a “white privilege” card, instead of a driver’s license as identification.
The department finally made a statement on the matter after investigating the incident in July, where officers pulled over Mimi Israelah at 3:30 AM for weaving. She posted a since-deleted video on social media, showing officers Nicholas Bowe and Charles Worland laughing as she presented the I.D. card.
One of the cops said it was “hilarious.”, while plenty of people online were outraged and called on law enforcement in the Alaskan city to handle the situation. The officers said Israelah showed no signs of impairment, and they didn’t give her a ticket.
According to TMZ, Deputy Chief Sean Case released a statement. He acknowledged that the public was upset over the post.
“We recognize that the [Facebook] post, what was contained in that post, caused a bit of a public uproar, and there were a lot of people that saw that and did not like that post.”
The officers indeed violated the department policy, while the Anchorage PD wouldn’t go further into any detail about possible punishment. Both officers are reportedly still employed with the department as of this reporting.
