Marvel saw their fortune grow to greater heights with the release of “The Avengers” in 2012. The beloved superhero flick brought together six of the most popular Marvel creations to the big screen. “The Avengers” was a box office hit and laid the groundwork for future Marvel movies in many ways.
The 2019 instalment “Avengers: Endgame” saw the deaths of two of the original six Avengers as both Black Widow and Iron Man gave their lives to reclaim the Soul Stone and kill Thanos, respectively. But what if all the six Avengers died during the blockbuster movie.
Filmmakers Anthony and Joe Russo recently confirmed on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige pitched them on killing off all the original Avengers: Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Hulk, and Hawkeye.
“There were lots of rumors swirling about who was gonna die. Kevin did actually pitch, at one point, taking all the OGs off the board. We thought it was way too aggressive and that the audience wouldn’t be able to process it.
“And that, in fact, picking one or two characters to make sacrifices throughout the movie might give you moments throughout the film where the action could stop and you could have emotional catharsis and then continue with the narrative.”
The Russo Bros. ended up going forward with their decision that led to the deaths of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow. “Avengers: Endgame” opened to critical and commercial success. It is currently the second-highest grossing movie of all time, behind James Cameron’s 2009 hit “Avatar.”
