Sega designed the first Sonic game, released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis, to compete with Nintendo’s mascot Mario. Its success helped Sega become one of the leading video game companies during the fourth generation of games consoles in the early 1990s. Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s release date was recently scheduled for Christmas 2024.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Paramount is getting prepared for a Christmas bonanza. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be released in theaters on December 20th, 2024, according to the studio. That should spell a huge Holiday box office for Mr. Needlemouse.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 opened earlier this year to a huge $72.1 million, providing a significant boost to the domestic box office recovery, particularly for family films. The film went on to gross more than $401 million at the worldwide box office, a respectable sum considering the recovery was just getting off.
Sonic 2 was one of the few COVID-19 films to open ahead of its predecessor. Other bragging rights: It scored the biggest launch of all time for a video game adaptation, beating the first Sonic, and was also Paramount’s biggest three-day opening since 2014.
The film franchise stars James Marsden, Jim Carrey, and Ben Schwartz. Avatar 3 by James Cameron will compete with Sonic 3. It is currently planned to open over the year holidays in 2024 (the Avatar sequels have moved around numerous times).
In a related announcement, Paramount also announced its untitled Smurfs animated musical. It was previously set to open in cinemas on December 20, 2024, but will now debut on February 14, 2025. To get the latest updates, keep an eye on Thirsty.
