Shakira Seeking ‘Refuge’ In Miami After Tax Fraud Case In Spain

Shakira, the global superstar, has endured a difficult few months. After an eleven-year relationship and two children, she and soccer player Gerard Piqué separated in June. A month later, it was reported that she had allegedly failed to pay millions in taxes and was facing up to eight years in prison for tax fraud.

According to Page Six, Shakira wants to leave her problems in Spain. Shakira is tired of Barcelona and intends to go to Miami, where she will be free of the negative memories and an active fraud investigation.

Shakira has many close family and friends in Miami Beach, where she also has a waterfront mansion. According to her friend Ana Lourdes Martinez, the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer regards the place as a “refuge.” “Miami is her home,” added Martinez.

“Her parents live here, her brother lives here, her niece and nephew, too. She doesn’t have any family in Spain. It’s a different environment from Barcelona.”

People close to Shakira, including fellow musician Alejandro Sanz, are apparently attempting to persuade her to move to Florida. Many believe Shakira is leaving Barcelona to get away from her ex, Piqué, who has been accused of infidelity. For months before he and Shakira split up, the soccer star was allegedly privately texting other women and secretly seeing a 23-year-old public relations student.

Shakira and Piqué are now embroiled in a custody battle for their two children, Milan and Sasha. The children are currently staying with their father following a vacation to Mexico, Los Angeles, and Miami with Shakira. It remains to be seen who will be granted custody.
