Cher is often referred to by the media as the “Goddess of Pop.” She is well-known for her distinctive contralto singing voice and for her work in a variety of entertainment fields. Twitter recently got heated after one person declared Dua Lipa is the “Cher of our generation.”
The Goddess of Pop slammed a fan who compared Dua Lipa to her in a cheeky tweet on Tuesday. “Dua Lipa, the Cher of our generation,” the Twitter user wrote along with a video of the “Levitating” singer at last year’s Grammy Awards. Cher, on the other hand, didn’t seem to agree, tweeting, “How many years are in a generation?”
Several netizens chimed in with their thoughts on the comparison.
You’re the only Cher of all generations, they can be beautiful and talented but no one compares, it’s like comparing candles and a Supernova, You win.
False. I’m a millennial and it will always be Cher for me.
Cher is for boomers/ gen X. Dua Lipa is for millennials/ gen Z.
One thing is being *inspired* by someone, and other is being a replacement. Dua is the Dua Lipa of our generation. Cher is Cher. No need to compare two completely different individuals in talent just because one dress like the other.
often imitated, never duplicated.
The “Don’t Start Now” singer famously donned a skimpy Versace butterfly gown to the 2021 Grammys, drawing comparisons to Cher’s flashy butterfly-themed ensemble from the 1974 show. Lipa also channeled her inner Cher for a 2018 Paris performance by donning the “Believe” singer’s classic Bob Mackie naked dress adorned with feathers that she wore to the 1974 Met Gala.
Both superstars collaborated with Versace. According to Paper magazine, Lipa was chosen as the face of the Italian fashion house in June 2021. Meanwhile, Cher collaborated with Versace to create her own line, Chersace, for Pride 2022 this summer.
So it’s no wonder that Lipa has mirrored some of Cher’s iconic looks over the years and was compared as a result. Let’s see if Dua ever addresses this. To get the latest updates, keep an eye on Thirsty.
