Spears has returned to the top of the charts. “Hold Me Closer,” the Princess of Pop’s new duet with Elton John, debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 on Tuesday. It’s Spears’ 14th number-one single, and her first in a decade.
On August 26th, the “Toxic” singer and John released “Hold Me Closer,” a reinterpretation of the Rocket Man’s masterpieces “Tiny Dancer” and “The One.” The dance single swiftly rose to the top of the iTunes charts in over 40 countries, earning plaudits from reviewers as well as Spears’ attorney, Mathew Rosengart.
“No one should be surprised that her first foray [since her conservatorship ended] is a smash success.”
At the time, the former federal prosecutor told Page Six that he was “so very proud” of his client. Meanwhile, John expressed his hope that the song’s immediate success would give his colleague, “confidence in herself to get back into the studio, make more records and realize that she is bloody good.”
Prior to “Hold Me Closer,” Spears scored 13 Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hits, including “…Baby One More Time” in 1998, “Womanizer” in 2008, “Hold It Against Me” in 2011, and “Scream & Shout” with Will.i.am in 2013. She also has six Billboard 200 No. 1 albums: 1999’s “…Baby One More Time,” 2000’s “Oops!… I Did It Again,” 2001’s “Britney,” 2003’s “In the Zone,” 2008’s “Circus,” and 2011’s “Femme Fatale.”
Spears announced a hiatus in January 2019 and later described it as a labor strike, stating that she did not want her family, specifically her divorced father, Jamie Spears, to continue benefiting from her lucrative career while she was under conservatorship, which began in February 2008.
After Britney branded her conservatorship “abusive” in court in June 2021, a Los Angeles judge suspended Jamie as her legal guardian in September 2021, before canceling the arrangement entirely in November.
Since then, the “Toxic” singer has hinted that she intended to return to the studio, stating on Instagram in July, “I haven’t shared my voice in an extremely long time … may be too long.”
