There has been a lot of drama before the launch of Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling at the Venice Film Festival, and Warner Bros is definitely trying its best to avoid any further apparent clashes between director Wilde and her actress, Florence Pugh. Now Pugh is skipping out in the festivities to avoid more negative attention.
According to Rolling Stone, two insiders have informed the outlet that Florence Pugh will not be attending the film’s New York red carpet premiere on September 19th.
According to the official explanation provided for Pugh’s absence, the actress is now filming Dune: Part Two in Budapest and director Denis Villeneuve is unable to release her for a press event for another movie. She previously left the Dune set to go to the world premiere of Don’t Worry Darling in Venice, but skipped the press conference.)
While speaking about Florence and Olivia, an insider told Rolling Stone, “From what I understand, there is friction, but I don’t know why. It’s pretty clear she’s (Florence) choosing not to be a part of the PR. It’s clearly not beneficial to Olivia to not have her be a part of the PR. It has to be a Florence decision.”
At the Venice premiere, Wilde and Pugh were seated on each end of a row, with Chris Pine occupying the seat next to them. Given that their relationship had the potential to overwhelm the movie, the pair sat separately.
In an interview with Variety, Wilde hinted that she replaced original male lead actor Shia LaBeouf with Styles because LaBeouf’s “process was not conducive to the ethos that I demand in my productions.”
However, LaBeouf responded by saying he left the picture due to a lack of rehearsal time. He also uploaded a video in which Wilde appeared to side with LaBeouf in the midst of his feud with Pugh, saying, “I think this might be a bit of a wake-up call for Miss Flo, and I want to know if you’re open to giving this a shot with me, with us.”
According to Variety, by the time the Venice premiere came around, reporters were analyzing body language and cast chemistry. During the four-minute standing ovation, Pugh and Wilde avoided making eye contact. Also, when Harry Styles took his seat at the premiere, video footage of Styles seeming to spit on Pine went viral.
