Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch and a rock of stability across much of a turbulent century, has died. She was 96 years old at the time of her passing. The whole world is mourning her loss.
Buckingham Palace announced the queen had died on Thursday in Scotland with the royal family tweeting: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.” The news came just hours after the palace said the monarch had been placed under medical supervision, with doctors “concerned” over her well-being.
It should be noted by Wednesday evening, the queen cancelled all her virtual meetings. Additionally, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla travelled to Balmoral Castle to be by the queen’s side. Other members of the royal family, including Prince William, visited Scotland on Thursday.
The queen recovered from Covid-19 earlier this year in February. Her declining health over the last few years has been cause for concern. In June, during the Platinum Jubilee, marking her 70 years on the throne, Queen Elizabeth II made an appearance on a balcony of Buckingham Palace during the parade. However, she did not attend the rest of the celebrations.
Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was one of the many who spoke out to pay tribute to The Queen. “It was with the heaviest of hearts that we learned of the passing of Canada’s longest-reigning Sovereign, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. She was a constant presence in our lives – and her service to Canadians will forever remain an important part of our country’s history.”
Even Paddington Bear tweeted out to say, “Thank you Ma’am, for everything.”
Elizabeth ascended the throne at age 25 in 1952 after the abrupt death of her father King George VI. During her long reign, the queen helped the United Kingdom navigate many political, social, and economic upheavals, from the aftermath of WWII to sovereignty of nation states to the decolonization of territories in South Asia. Upon news of her passing, people across the globe mourned on social media, including politicians, leaders, and celebrities. You can check it all out below.
