Lil Nas X has never failed to attract people’s attention with his music or looks. Unsurprisingly, there are people who have protested and denounced his homosexuality. Nas has now made the headlines for providing such people pizzas outside his concert.
During Lil Nas X’s tour stop, attendees lined up outside the MGM Music Hall over the weekend. Across the street, a group of religious demonstrators gathered and held up large posters pleading with his followers to “repent and believe.” In typical Lil Nas X flair, he made light of that awkward situation by tweeting, “Just told my crew to send them pizza, this is really good promo!”
One of the crew members of the “Montero” rapper handed boxes of pizza to the homophobic fans in the video. Sadly, the pizza wasn’t accepted, but Nas still had a funny thing to say. Lil Nas X quipped, “Update: they didn’t want the pizza, but I unintentionally fell in love with one of the homophobic protestors.
Lil Nas X updated his fans with a video of his team going over to hand the protesters pizza. One of the protestors held up a microphone and said, “We thank you, and we appreciate, but no, thank you.” As Sufjan Stevens’ “Mystery of Love” played, the video zoomed in on another demonstrator wearing a shirt that read “Christ’s forgiveness ministry.”
Lil Nas X has long been open about his sexual orientation, even making gay jokes and memes. One of the few openly gay males in hip-hop, he recently discussed this in an interview with Rolling Stone. To represent LGBT individuals in the music industry, he claimed, has been a process with “ups and downs.”
“It has its ups and downs. But ultimately, I feel like it’s made me stronger. It’s helped me a lot. It’s put me in a lot of nice places, in a lot of great places. It’s been a real, steep, steep hill of like, just trying to gain that confidence to keep pushing and do a lot of the things that I do sometimes. We always make it to that next round.”
The “Industry Baby” rapper is currently on his “Long Live Montero” tour, his first string of headlining dates. On Tuesday, he’ll play at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall. Starting Nov. 8, Lil Nas will go overseas to wrap up the tour’s last leg in Europe, which ends on November 17th in Barcelona, Spain.
