Spanish Court Orders Shakira To Stand Trial

Shakira has encountered a difficult few months. She and soccer player Gerard Piqué separated in June after an eleven-year relationship and two children. A month later, it was revealed that she had reportedly failed to pay millions of dollars in taxes and risked up to eight years in jail for tax fraud. A Spanish court has now ordered Shakira to stand trial.

Fox News reports that Shakira could spend more than 8 years in jail and be fined $24 million euros due to suspicions of tax evasion. A Spanish judge recently ordered Shakira to appear in court for a tax fraud case that could result in a sentence of more than 8 years in prison. The 45-year-old singer Shakira is charged with stealing $14.5 million in taxes from the Spanish government between 2012 and 2014.

The singer of “Hips Don’t Lie” claimed she only spent about 50 percent of each of those years in Spain. Although a trial date has not yet been scheduled, a judge in Barcelona has now mandated that she show up. The megastar turned down a plea agreement in the case earlier this year, putting her at risk of 8 years and 2 months in a prison sentence and a $24 million euro fine if found guilty.

In a statement to Fox News Digital in late July, Shakira’s representatives stated their confidence in their client’s case. “Shakira has always cooperated and abided by the law, demonstrating impeccable conduct as an individual and a taxpayer and faithfully following the counsel of PriceWaterhouse Coopers, a prestigious and globally recognized tax firm.”

Her 11-year marriage to Barcelona player Gerard Pique, a professional soccer player, is when the alleged fraud allegedly occurred. Despite divorcing in June, the couple shares two kids.
