Scooby-Doo has been a staple part of our childhood for most of us. Brainiac Velma, jock Fred, fashionista Daphne, hippie Shaggy, and Shaggy’s high-strung, talking Great Dane, Scooby-Doo, climb into their green van, the Mystery Machine, and hit the road in search of weird phenomena to solve. Now, HBO Max’s new movie Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! acknowledges that the franchise’s Velma is a lesbian.
In a scene from the toon pic, the brainy, bespectacled Mystery Inc. character is visibly smitten with a female foil. Daphne (voiced byGrey Griffin), says in the scene, “I always thought it was a strange coincidence that all our cases seem to involve some supernatural creature.” Velma then replies, “But it wasn’t a coincidence — these costumes were created by one person.”
Enter Coco Diablo, played by Myrna Velasco, the legendary costume criminal syndicate’s leader and the one responsible for the eerie costumes. Velma mentally scans the scene as Coco tosses her long white hair and remarks, “Incredible glasses!” Wonderful turtleneck! Clearly brilliant! “Loving of animals!” Cut to shot of Velma’s glasses fogging up and her blushing.
The gang later teams up with Coco Diablo, and when she puts her hand on Velma’s shoulder. Meanwhile, the official trailers for the movie don’t include the scene, but Twitter has been all over it as the film hits the on-demand rental/sale market today ahead of its October 16th debut on HBO Max and DVD release two days after that.
For decades, even generations, Velma fan theories have been spread. Since its 1969 premiere in the Hanna-Barbera animated series Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?, the character and the franchise have made numerous appearances in movies and television shows. Meanwhile, you can check out the clip released by the studio below.
