It’s tragic loss for the Harry Potter community as Robbie Coltrane, the man behind the iconic character Hagrid passed away. He was 72 years old. Robbie Coltrane was the first person in the fictional movie to break it to Harry Potter that he was a wizard.
Coltrane’s agency informed The Hollywood Reporter that the actor passed away at the age of 72. Apart from his role as Hagrid, Robbie Coltrane is known for some popular roles in British television which include Flash Gordon, Blackadder, and Keep It in the Family. But fans around the world recognize him as Hagrid from the Harry Potter franchise.
Robbie Coltrane, during the recent Harry Potter 20th anniversary special, reflected on his time playing Hagrid while stating that he was glad to leave a legacy behind that will be loved for generations,
“The legacy of these movies is that my children’s generation will show them to their children. So, you could be watching them in 50 years’ time, easy.” he said. “I’ll not be here sadly… but Hagrid will.”
Although Robbie is most well-known for his role in the Harry Potter films, it isn’t the only popular franchise he has been part of. Robbie Coltrane also played Valentin Zukovsky in the James Bond films Goldeneye and The World Is Not Enough.
Robbie was married to Rhona Gemmel from 1999 to 2003. The couple have a son Spencer and daughter Alice. His death is a tragic loss to the entire Harry Potter community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family in these difficult times.
