Bill Russell was a legend of the Boston Celtics dynasty who has won 11 NBA championships in total and eight consecutive championships. However, the team has recently come up with a unique way to pay tribute to the late Hall of Famer with the team’s new jersey.
The Celtics announced it on Monday through Instagram, along with photos of Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Al Horford, and Grant Williams rocking the new gear. The uniforms are dark green, black, and gold, with 11 gold diamonds on the sides to represent the number of NBA titles Russell won during his career.
The new scripted Celtics wordmark was inspired by Slade’s Bar & Grill, which Russell owned in the 1960s. There is also another set of 11 gold diamonds surrounding Russell’s No. 6 jersey number on the waistband.
The Celtics also posted a tribute video on Instagram for the jersey release, which featured old clips of Russell and what he meant to the NBA and the rest of the world. “Paying homage to a true champion,” Celtics wrote in the caption, “and the Gold Standard of what it means to be a Celtic ☘️.”
To honor his title victories, the Celtics will wear the tribute jersey 11 times this season and will start with their season opener against the 76ers on Tuesday. Stay tuned to Thirsty for more updates.
