Jay-Z is widely acknowledged as one of the most influential artists in the hip-hop industry. Jay is also interested in fields other than hip-hop, and he now wants to discover how much money his well-known cognac business makes. He recently filed a lawsuit against his Bacardi partners to obtain that information.
According to documents obtained by TMZ Hip Hop, Jay-Z’s company SC Liquor is requesting complete financial clarity from Bacardi over D’Usse. It is the premium cognac brand in which Jay and Bacardi have a 50/50 stake. Jay and the booze giant have co-owned D’Usse since 2011.
He frequently mentions the brand in his songs and once drank it from one of his Grammys to promote it. However, the lawsuit makes it evident that something about the partnership legally known as D’Usse LLC isn’t sitting well. According to the documents, Jay-Z’s company requires all books and records and the location of all warehouses containing D’Usse barrels, bottles, and accessories.
They also want all information on Bacardi’s physical inventory and inventory process. It’s unclear what prompted Jay to seek this information, but there’s clearly a level of distrust between the partners. One sentence from the docs seems pretty telling: SC Liquor says it needs to “monitor the conduct of [Bacardi’s] business to protect SC’s rights as” a partner in the company.
Jay must have a reason for all of this. Let’s wait and see what happens next. To get the latest updates, keep an eye on Thirsty.
