Next year, Circle K gas stations will give new meaning to the term “highway.” Circle K has partnered with multi-state cannabis operator Green Thumb Industries to sell legal cannabis at Circle K gas stations in the state of Florida. The collaboration marks the first time cannabis will be sold at a gas station. It also comes after President Joe Biden said he is starting action to decriminalize the drug.
Marijuana had previously only been sold legally in dispensaries in the United States. Marijuana has also been sold at pharmacies in other countries with legal cannabis programs. Marijuana sales are expected to “continue to normalize” cannabis by fusing it with standard consumer products, according to Green Thumb CEO Ben Kovler, who described the relationship as a “futuristic deal.”
Bloomberg reports that Green Thumb will sell the cannabis in spaces that it leases from 10 Circle K locations. The cannabis outlets will be branded as “RISE Express,” with a separate entrance from the gas station. Cannabis will only be sold to residents who have medical marijuana cards. Around 700,000 people in Florida have access to the card.
The state only allows cannabis to be purchased for medical reasons. While this new partnership is limited to only ten locations, Circle K’s Kovler stated that “there is appetite” to expand its partnership across other states. Let’s see how it goes. To get the latest updates, keep an eye on Thirsty.
