Islam Makhachev faced off with Alexander Volkanovski moments after winning the vacant lightweight title by submitting Charles Oliveira at UFC 280. Makhachev broke the hearts of Charles Oliveira fans at UFC 280 this past weekend, making the Brazilian jiu-jitsu expert tap out.
Now, Dominance MMA CEO Ali Abdelaziz has accused Conor McGregor of trying to steal attention away from newly crowned lightweight champion Islam Makhachev and his future opponent Alexander Volkanovski. The 31-year-old captured the lightweight title and earned a Performance of the Night bonus for his second-round arm-triangle choke victory over ‘Do Bronx’.
During Makhachev’s celebrations, featherweight champ Volkanovski was welcomed to the cage and it was confirmed that he will step up in weight to challenge Makhachev for his first title defense. Following Islam Makhachev’s victory, Conor McGregor took to Twitter to diminish his accomplishments. ‘The Notorious’ then revealed he had a fighting style to defeat Makhachev in a series of deleted tweets.
Winners focus on winning. Losers focus on winners
Just watching and monitoring mate. That’s all. Happy for you in the spot tbh. I’ll be back. This is not over. You know.
Volkanovski shared his own post, which highlighted a previous tweet from McGregor. The pair then exchanged a respectful back and forth on social media before Ali Abdelaziz, the manager of Islam Makhachev, stepped in. Ali took to twitter to voice his annoyance at Conor’s insensitive remarks.
You dumb ass champ say losers focus on winners stop stealing people shine Khabib take your soul October 6. You are living without soul
Meanwhile, Conor McGregor has given his clearest indication yet that he desires to return to the UFC following a post on social media. The MMA superstar is currently filming for the Hollywood remake of ’80s action movie Road House. Stay tuned to Thirsty for more MMA news.
