‘Iron Man’ began the Marvel Cinematic Univers back in 2008 and it starred Terrence Howard as Tony Stark’s best friend and confidant, Lt. James Rhodes. When Marvel offered Howard only $1 million to return for the sequel, he declined the role. Of course, Marvel ended up replacing Howard with Don Cheadle. It seems Cheadle was only given 2 hours to agree to a 6-film deal while he was still at his kid’s birthday party.
Don Cheadle entered the MCU with 2010’s ‘Iron Man 2’ and eventually went on to star in seven movies and appeared in two Disney+ shows: “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” and “What If…?”
While speaking to speaking to GQ recently about his career, Don Cheadle talked about his acting career. Cheadle revealed that Marvel gave him only two hours to agree to a six-picture deal ahead of “Iron Man 2.” He was at his kid’s birthday party when Marvel made the call.
“I was at my kid’s laser-tag birthday party,” he said. “They called me and said: ‘This is what’s happening. We’re giving you the offer. If you don’t say yes, we’re going to the next person. This has to be — this is going to happen very fast.’ So they said, ‘Why don’t you go ahead and take an hour and decide if you want to do it?'”
The Marvel Cinematic Universe will continue to dominate films for the next decade and Don Cheadle will continue to be a part of it in the coming years. We’ll have to see how he will fae in his upcoming roles.
