John Cena’s contributions to WWE cannot be understated as he was the face of the company during the PG Era. He remained a babyface for the entire time and never turned heel. Vince McMahon even had an idea of turning him into a Bret Hart-like heel at one point in time, but it never materialized. In fact, there was a good reason why Cena never turned heel.
John Cena showed he could be an effective heel with his Doctor of Thuganomics gimmick. However, WWE never really pulled the trigger once Cena became the face of the company. Vince McMahon was even proud of rejecting ideas for Cena’s heel turn.
While speaking on The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, Matt Hardy talked about John Cena never turning heel. Hardy stated that he believes WWE likely kept Cena heel so he could keep doing his work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
”There’s some times in WWE where those decisions are made because the real person is just such a tremendous asset to the company in so many ways. That’s probably why they would never pull the trigger on it. I mean, would it have helped him in the long run? I think so. I think it would have, but I just feel like all the Make-A-Wishes, all the appearances, all the charity stuff he did, they just they wanted to keep him in that role. So that’s why they kept him in that same position, kind of like on cruise control.”
Cena recently returned to the ring on the December 30 episode of WWE SmackDown and won his match, where he teamed up with Kevin Owens to defeat Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn. John Cena also granted several kids Make-A-Wishes on Smackdown last year. We will have to wait and see what’s next in store for the Leader Of Cenation.
