It’s no surprise that the DCEU is getting a major overhaul. Everything fans knew about their favorite movie franchises will be changing forever. For example, Black Adam 2 is no longer happening and Henry Cavill is out as Superman and may portray another character. Even Jason Momoa’s iconic character Aquaman isn’t safe from the overhaul. Ever since news of the makeover broke, there have been rumors that much like Henry Cavill, Jason Momoa may be assigned another character within the DCEU.
These rumors came as a bit of a shock to fans since Momoa’s initial portrayal of Aquaman was quite successful and proved to be a massive financial success for DC Studios.
Momoa is currently at the Sundance Film Festival promoting Deep Rising, a documentary where he narrates about organizations allegedly extracting metals from the deep sea floor. Although it’s a serious subject, the topic of the DCEU shakeup was brought up. To this, the actor replied:
“I’ll always be Aquaman. Ain’t anyone coming in there and taking s*it. There might be some other characters, too. I can play other things, too. I can be funny and savage and charming.”
Jason Momoa’s statement is a bit cryptic. He could be trying to say that he will always be Aquaman in the fans’ minds or that he might portray another character apart from Aquaman inside the DCEU.
Momoa also discussed the role he played in creating the upcoming Aquaman sequel. He explained that he and his partner wrote the first treatment which was a 55-page document.
“The beautiful thing [about Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom] is me and my partner wrote the first treatment for it and it was about a 55-page treatment, and a lot of it has to deal with me talking to the U.N. about what’s happening with the melting ice caps,” Momoa explained. “There’s no far off galaxy coming to destroy us or aliens from another place. It’s us ruining our planet. We need to get it together and save our home.”
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to hit theaters on December 25, 2023. Given the success of the first film, it shouldn’t have a problem at the box office. Stay tuned to Thirsty For News as we bring you similar stories.
