Kendrick Lamar is one of the most popular rappers on the planet. He first gained major attention with the release of his fourth mixtape, “Overly Dedicated” in 2010. He then released his debut studio album “Section.80” in 2011, which included the hit single “HiiiPoWeR”. Lamar’s major label debut album, “good kid, m.A.A.d city”, was released in 2012 to widespread critical acclaim and commercial success, and it earned him seven Grammy nominations. He released his fourth album, “To Pimp a Butterfly” in 2015, which won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album and was also critically acclaimed.
His fifth studio album “DAMN.” was released in 2017 and won a Grammy award for Best Rap Album, and also received widespread critical acclaim. He also received the Pulitzer Prize for Music for “DAMN.”
The album featured production credits from James Blake, BadBadNotGood, Greg Kurstin, Steve Lacy, 9th Wonder and The Alchemist as well as guest vocals from Rihanna, Zacari, and U2.
DAMN debuted atop the US Billboard 200 with 603,000 album-equivalent units earned in its first week. The album finished the year atop the Billboard 200 in 2017 and was the thirteenth most popular album for 2018. The album has since been certified triple platinum.
Since making it to the Billboard 200, the album has never left the chart and has now spent 300 weeks on the charts. This isn’t Lamar’s first successful project though.
Prior to DAMN, Lamar’s album “good kid, m.A.A.d city” recently became the first hip-hop studio album to spend 10 years on the Billboard chart. His latest release Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers topped the Billboard 200 charts and earned the rapper a nomination at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards.
