WWE Had Plan In Mind Behind Controversial Brock Lesnar Squash Match

Brock Lesnar is certainly one of the most decorated and accomplished pro wrestlers in the history of the industry. Throughout his two runs with WWE, The Beast Incarnate was an unstoppable force of nature, with barely anyone being able to topple The Beast. He also squashed Kofi Kingston a few years ago and it seems WWE had a plan in mind for the squash match.

On the debut episode of WWE Smackdown on FOX back on October 4, 2019, Brock Lesnar challenged Kofi Kingston for the title. In a move that still has fans questioning the booking decision, Brock Lesnar squashed Kofi Kingston in seven seconds and became the WWE Champion.

Immediately after the win, Brock Lesnar was confronted by Cain Velasquez, who quickly took down Brock Lesnar and ran him out of the ring. That being said, their feud turned out to be a disappointment.

Even a few years on, many people still feel it was a horrible booking decision. This is because fans and pro wrestlers alike felt Kofi Kingston deserved better than to get humiliated like that.

While speaking on the Public Enemies Podcast, former WWE writer Chris Dunn talked about Brock Lesnar’s controversial win over Kofi Kingston. Dunn revealed that WWE had a plan in mind for the win, which was to make Lesnar as dominant as possible before his feud with Cain Velasquez.

“I think the feeling was that Brock wasn’t going back to Kofi,” Dunn said. “He was going [to face] Cain and they wanted to build the Cain match, and they felt like that dominant of a performance was the way to do that. I think it sucked.”

That squash match was used as a way to introduce Cain Velasquez during SmackDown’s FOX debut. In the end, it only resulted in one Saudi Arabian match for Cain and Brock. Then WWE released Velasquez a short time later, so many fans feel it was all for nothing.
