Madonna announced last week that she will embark on a tour to commemorate her 40 years of career, and speculation erupted about what would happen with the film, given that pre-production is already underway. However, considering the popularity of Madonna’s Celebration Tour ticket sales, which sold out in a matter of minutes in several cities, the film will have to wait indefinitely. According to recent reports, one of the primary reasons the film fell apart was because the legend wanted a ‘grittier’ script.
Madonna’s current Celebration Tour video announcement is a nasty nod to her 1991 documentary ‘Truth or Dare.’ Amy Schumer dared Madonna to embark on a world tour and “play your greatest motherf—ing hits” in front of Diplo, Eric André, Jack Black, and others. “So the answer is: F-k yeah!” exclaimed the singer. However, it means that her long-planned biopic, reportedly starring ‘Ozark’ actress Julia Garner, is no longer moving forward at Universal Pictures.
“Madonna will someday make a film about her life,” a friend of the singer’s confirmed to Page Six. “But this tour is the creative and professional focus for M right now.” The Vogue legend was set to direct the picture herself, but an insider revealed that there was a squabble with Universal over the script. “Basically, they don’t like it,” a source said of the studio.
They want it to be pop and light. Madonna wants something much grittier, and it’s come to a stalemate. She’d rather go to another studio than change the script. She still wants to make the film, but will now look at it again after the tour. She’s keeping the same writers, but is aware that she might have to recast if the actors aren’t available.
Madonna claimed the film will depict “my struggle as an artist trying to live in a man’s world as a woman” during an Instagram Live session in September 2020. She worked with Oscar winner Diablo Cody of ‘Juno’ fame at first, before replacing her with Erin Wilson who wrote the screenplays for ‘Secretary’ and ‘The Girl on the Train.’
It was announced in June that ‘Ozark’ actor Garner had earned the part of the pop icon after a tough 16-week singing and dancing boot camp attended by Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie, Odessa Young, and Bebe Rexha. This delay wouldn’t slow down the trajectory of Garner who recently won both a Golden Globe and an Emmy for her role on ‘Ozark.’ She’s now signed on to film ‘The Royal Hotel,’ a thriller about two young ladies travelling in Australia as well as ‘Apartment 7A.’
Madonna’s 35-city global tour will begin on July 15 in Vancouver and the dates have been stretched out to two or three nights per location to ensure the star’s health. Let’s see what else the music legend has in store for us. Keep an eye on Thirsty for the most latest updates.
