Michael Jordan is certainly one of the most iconic basketball players to have ever stepped foot inside a basketball court. He is also no stranger to setting records. It seems yet another movie will be released that has something to do with his life – most notably his partnership with Nike.
Just prior to the highly anticipated Super Bowl airing of the Ben Affleck-directed film trailer, Amazon unveiled the first official trailer for Air. MGM will debut the film exclusively in theaters nationwide on April 5, 2023, on over 3,000 screens. Following its theatrical release, the film will be made available for streaming. This marks Affleck’s eagerly awaited directorial follow-up to his 2016 film “Live by Night” and his 2012 Academy Award-winning best picture, “Argo.”
Set in the year 1984, Air chronicles the remarkable partnership between Nike’s basketball division and the then-rookie Michael Jordan. Despite his lack of experience on the court, Nike recognized something special in Jordan and took a chance on the young player. Initially, company executives were hesitant to associate with a relatively unknown figure, but their collaboration would go on to revolutionize the sports world and cement its relationship with pop culture through the iconic launch of Air Jordan sneakers.
As the official synopsis of Air states, the film is “a moving story of an unconventional team that took a career-defining gamble, a mother who believed in her son’s immense talent, and a basketball phenom who would go on to become the greatest of all time.” The talented cast includes Ben Affleck as Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro, Matt Damon as Nike co-founder Phil Knight, and Viola Davis as Michael Jordan’s mother, Deloris Jordan.
The Air cast also includes Jason Bateman as Rob Strasser, Chris Messina as David Falk, Chris Tucker as Howard White, Matthew Maher as Peter Moore, Gustaf Skarsgård as Horst Dassler and Julius Tennon as James Jordan. Air was produced by Peter Guber, Jason Michael Berman, Jeff Robinov, and Madison Ainley, as well as Damon and Affleck. David Ellison, Jesse Sisgold, and Jon Weinbach produced the film for Skydance Sports.
