Selena Gomez is one of the few celebrities who has been open about who manages her social media accounts, including her Instagram, which has 378 million followers. The relationship between Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber is one of the most controversial since fans are still not over them as a couple. After receiving several harsh comments comparing her to Justin Bieber’s many lovers, Selena recently revealed that this is the reason why her Instagram is maintained by someone else.
While speaking to Vanity Fair for its 29th annual Hollywood issue Selena hinted that her relationship with Justin Bieber was the cause for this social media handoff.
I never got the chance to go to an actual high school. The world was my high school for the longest time, and I started getting inundated with information that I didn’t want. I went through a hard time in a breakup, and I didn’t want to see any of the [feedback]—not necessarily about the relationship, but the opinions of me versus [someone] else. There’d be thousands of really nice comments, but my mind goes straight to the mean one. People can call me ugly or stupid, and I’m like, Whatever. But these people get detailed. They write paragraphs that are so specific and mean. I would constantly be crying. I constantly had anxiety…I couldn’t do it anymore. It was a waste of my time.
Justin and Selena started dating in 2011, with the Vanity Fair Oscar Party serving as their improvised Senior Prom. Their relationship appeared to be falling apart in 2014, despite the fact that they had been in one other’s circle for years. Selena had a love relationship with Zedd and dated The Weeknd. Justin had relationships with a number of ladies, including Sofia Richie.
Justin and Selena appeared to reconcile in 2017 but they separated permanently in 2018. In September 2018 Justin married Hailey Baldwin and in 2019, Selena released “Lose You To Love Me,” a song that marked the end of their relationship. Even after the romance ended several years ago people were and continue to be obsessed with Selena and Justin’s relationship. Selena became so tired of being compared to Justin’s girlfriends that she decided to hand over her Twitter and Instagram accounts to her staff.
Selena did admit to the outlet that she had TikTok on her phone since the culture on that platform is “a little less hostile” than others. “I’m kind of a nerd. I love making funny videos. I’ll get recipes and makeup ideas and hair ideas,” she said. She also doesn’t fault social media in general. “There are wonderful things about social media—connecting with fans, seeing how happy and excited they are and their stories,” adds Selena.
But usually that’s filtered through [for me now]. I created a system. Everything I do I send to my assistant who posts them. As far as comments, my team will put together a few things that are encouraging.
Even though Selena hates the long paragraphs of hatred from her followers, she and Hailey share a lot of love and respect. Social media is a world where everything is fake which is why our youth is so depressed and cyberbullying is also at an all-time high these days. Selena is enjoying her best life now that she is no longer on social media which speaks volumes. Keep an eye on Thirsty for the most latest updates.
