Brittney Griner made multiple headlines last year after being arrested at a Russian airport back in February for reportedly carrying weed in her bag. However, Griner was a free agent until now and according to recent reports, she re-signed with the Mercury on a one-year deal.
A person familiar with the deal spoke to The Associated Press on February 18 on the condition of anonymity due to the fact that no announcement had been made. In a social media post in December, Griner announced her intention to return to Phoenix after her return from her 10-month ordeal in Russia, which included time spent in a Russian jail and culminated in a dramatic prisoner swap.
The 6-foot-9 center last played for the Mercury in 2021, when she assisted the team in reaching the WNBA Finals. During that season, she had a 20.5 point and 9.5 rebound average.
The news of Griner’s signing was first announced on the website “Her Hoops Stats.” Griner was drafted No. 1 in 2013 by the Mercury.
Diana Taurasi was given a multiyear deal by the Mercury earlier on Saturday. Since being drafted No. 1 by the team in 2004, the WNBA’s all-time leading scorer has only played with the Mercury. Stay tuned to Thirsty For News to get the latest updates.
