Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania hit theatres on February 17th, 2023, marking the first film in Phase 5 of the MCU. The movie had a grand opening, and it stormed the box office with amazing numbers.
According to studio estimates released on Sunday, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” debuted to a domestic audience with $104 million in ticket sales, easily overtaking the previous two Ant-Man movies’ opening weekends. The Walt Disney Co.’s “Quantumania” made an additional $121.3 million overseas, giving the diminutive hero a $225 million global launch.
The movie is without a doubt the biggest opening of the year to date. And “Quantumania” succeeded despite the 31st MCU movie receiving an uncharacteristically negative response. On a like-for-like basis, Quantumania is estimated to perform 13% better than Ant-Man internationally and 27% worse than Ant-Man and The Wasp.
The $118M four-day domestic start ranks third among all President’s Day opening weekends. Also receiving a “B” CinemaScore from viewers, “Quantumania” wasn’t well received. Only one other MCU movie has a CinemaScore that low, and that movie is “Eternals.”
But regardless of the reviews, theatres are hoping that “Quantumania,” the year’s first big hit, is a sign of things to come. There are about 30 more wide releases scheduled for 2023, following the turmoil of the previous three years. Keep an eye on Thirsty For News to get the latest updates.
