James Gunn is making huge changes to DC and fans remain optimistic about this fact. It began earlier last year when it was revealed that Henry Cavill will no longer be playing Superman in future films now that the DCEU will be getting a full-blown reboot. Now it seems Gunn’s Superman movie was greenlit before Cavill came back.
James Gunn has recently revealed additional information about the ‘Superman’ debacle, suggesting that Henry Cavill may have been caught up in a larger game. It appears that Cavill may have been used as a pawn in the situation.
The newly appointed Co-Chief of DC Studios responded to fans’ inquiries on Sunday regarding an Instagram story he shared over the weekend. The story provided some insight into when he officially started working on upcoming DC Universe movies, such as the highly anticipated ‘Superman: Legacy.’
According to Gunn’s Instagram story, the ‘Creature Commandos’ movie that he is overseeing has already entered pre-production. However, he also revealed that both ‘Creature Commandos’ and his ‘Superman’ project had been in development behind the scenes before he and Peter Safran were officially brought on as Co-Chiefs of DC Studios on October 25th. This was just one day after Henry Cavill had announced that he was returning as Superman.
In subsequent tweets, Gunn confirmed that he had been hired to write ‘Superman: Legacy’ over six months prior to his Instagram story. He also clarified that his vision for the film was always intended to be separate from Zack Snyder’s version of the character, which is the same iteration that Henry Cavill had briefly believed he would be reprising.
In essence, James Gunn is asserting that he had already received the approval to create a new Superman storyline, although it seems that Henry Cavill was not informed of this. In fact, it appears that Cavill was instructed by Warner Bros. to announce his official return to the role, despite the studio having no genuine interest in pursuing that direction. This is evident by the appointment of Gunn and Safran as co-heads of DC Studios and the subsequent decision to replace Cavill.
It does appear that Henry Cavill may have been misled or misinformed by Warner Bros. about his potential involvement in future Superman projects. It is difficult to determine who may be responsible for this miscommunication, given the numerous changes in WB’s executive leadership over the past two years. It is likely that this experience has soured Cavill’s relationship with the studio, particularly since he is now set to star in films with different studios. It remains to be seen whether he will work with Warner Bros. in the future.
