Aubrey Plaza had her first leading film role in Safety Not Guaranteed after beginning her career performing improv and sketch comedy at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater (2012). Aubrey Plaza has made a profession out of creating awkward situations on camera and her talent made its way onto the winner’s podium at the 29th Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night. Fans are now calling the awkward moment ‘peak’ Aubrey Plaza.
Plaza and her “White Lotus” co-stars received the SAG Award for Outstanding Ensemble in a Drama Series in 2023. However, it was the “Parks and Recreation” alum’s on-stage facial gestures that got the internet buzzing. It was the night’s final TV award, and as the cast reassembled onstage, industry veteran F. Murray Abraham delivered the acceptance speech.
While Aubrey was making her way to a visible spot among her co-stars Meghann Fahy, Theo James, and Will Sharpe, fellow “White Lotus” actor Jon Gries could be seen whispering something in her ear. The encounter caused the actress to readjust her dress, prompting many online to speculate that Gries was warning her of a possible wardrobe malfunction. Aubrey’s eyes darted around when Abraham sent “a prayer out to the earthquake victims of Syria and Turkey and a prayer for peace in Ukraine and Russia” followed by the rallying cry “Union forever!” which had the audience cheering.
Regardless of what she was thinking or experiencing, her expressions drew all of the attention of viewers at home. Following that, everyone in the cast hugged and congratulated each other until Aubrey stole the show again by mouthing “Jesus Christ” in obvious frustration. Viewers at home appeared to believe the incident was caused by an overeager hug between Meghann Fahy and Michael Imperioli which resulted in a clumsy elbow that barely missed Aubrey in the face.
The series of apparently uncomfortable moments sent fans into a frenzy on Twitter, with some wondering what she was angry about and others noting how the actress’s scene-stealing character is what makes her so special. Earlier in the show, Aubrey shared the platform with “Wednesday” breakout star Jenna Ortega, and the two displayed amazing and very dark chemistry. They were there to give the prize for best male performance in a television movie or limited series. “I don’t know why they paired us up together,” Aubrey deadpanned after perhaps a full ten seconds of silence.
With Ortega responding that she understands they have nothing in common the “Emily the Criminal” actress suggested that they should find the people who did this. The duo then recited in unison: “And curse their families and watch as misfortune follows their bloodline for the next seven generations.” Keep an eye on Thirsty for the most latest updates.
