Drake has made headlines once again for his big bets on MMA fights. Ahead of UFC 285, the rapper has placed a $500,000 bet on Jon Jones to win via knockout or submission in his upcoming fight against Ciryl Gane. This marks another high-stakes wager for Drake, whose history of losing big bets in MMA has led to the “curse” moniker.
The rapper posted a pair of bets on his Instagram page on Saturday, showing he put down $250,000 on a potential submission and another $250,000 on a knockout. If Jones achieves either finish, Drake could potentially earn a payout of either $1.7 million or $1.3 million, respectively. However, if Jones wins by decision or Gane pulls off the upset to become the new UFC heavyweight champion, Drake wins nothing.
As mentioned above, Drake’s history of losing big bets in MMA has led to the “curse” moniker. In a previous fight, he famously lost a $2 million bet on Israel Adesanya to beat Alex Pereira, who ultimately won via knockout in the fifth and final round. Drake has also come up short in previous bets while wagering on Jorge Masvidal, Justin Gaethje, and Jose Aldo.
While his losses probably earn more headlines than his wins, Drake hasn’t completely missed the target over the years. He had a massive parlay on Paddy Pimblett and Molly McCann ahead of their fights at UFC London while also winning with Adesanya previously when he competed at UFC 276.
It remains to be seen if Drake’s bet will pay off at UFC 285, as Jones seeks to return from a three-year absence and become heavyweight champion following the longest reign in UFC history while holding the light heavyweight title. Jones’ career has been a tumultuous one, including several suspensions and legal troubles outside of the octagon. However, he is considered one of the greatest fighters of all time, with an impressive record of 26 wins, one loss, and one no contest.
Gane, on the other hand, is a rising star in the UFC, with a perfect record of 10 wins and no losses. He is known for his impressive striking skills and has finished five of his opponents via knockout or technical knockout.
The fight between Jones and Gane is expected to be an exciting showdown between two highly skilled fighters. UFC 285 is set to take place on tonight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
