The legendary rapper 2Pac, who passed away but continues to influence the world of music and culture, has received a posthumous honor in his hometown of Oakland, California. A section of MacArthur Boulevard, close to where Tupac Shakur once lived, has been renamed “Tupac Shakur Way.”
According to the Associated Press, the renaming ceremony took place on Friday, November 3, and was attended by Tupac’s family, including his sister Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur. Additionally, several notable figures from the hip-hop community, such as MC Hammer, were present to pay their respects.
During the unveiling of the street sign, Sekyiwa Shakur expressed her wishes for Tupac’s spirit to continue living on in the streets and in the hearts of the people. MC Hammer, a close friend of Tupac during his impactful life, declared Tupac as “hands down, the greatest rapper ever.”
City Councilwoman Carroll Fife, who led the initiative to rename the street, emphasized Tupac’s deep connection to Oakland, stating that he claimed Oakland and credited the city for shaping his career.
The renaming of MacArthur Boulevard to Tupac Shakur Way is a fitting tribute to the iconic rapper’s legacy, and it serves as a reminder of his enduring impact on the world of music and his connection to his hometown of Oakland.
