Hold onto your Arc Reactors, folks, because the rumor mill is buzzing with news that Robert Downey Jr. could be suiting up as Tony Stark once again in the MCU.
Marvel aficionados were left in tears when RDJ’s iconic Tony Stark met his heroic end in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, and the actor had seemingly hung up the Iron Man suit for good. He hadn’t even returned to voice the character in the animated series “What If…?” Instead, he embarked on fresh adventures outside the MCU. However, recent whispers suggest that the bigwigs at Marvel Studios have been in talks about assembling the original Avengers crew for a new cinematic extravaganza, including Iron Man and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow.
Adding fuel to the fire, renowned movie insider MyTimeToShineHello on X dropped a bombshell by reporting that “RDJ already agreed to come back,” potentially making him the first Avenger to sign up for this epic reunion.
Before you start donning your Iron Man suits in excitement, it’s crucial to note that neither the actor nor Marvel Studios has confirmed this news. Plus, Marvel had yet to give the green light to the reported Avengers project. However, in the ever-evolving landscape of Hollywood, where box office returns for superhero flicks have seen better days this year (with a few exceptions like “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”), the idea of bringing back RDJ’s Tony Stark could be a strategic move to reignite the MCU’s box office prowess.
Fans, true to their passionate nature, have been yearning for Tony Stark’s return, especially with the multiverse offering endless possibilities for his comeback. Recent fan art, inspired by “Avengers: Secret Wars,” has portrayed Iron Man reuniting with Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, igniting the dream of seeing these beloved characters share the screen once more. So, even if the rumored Avengers reunion doesn’t materialize, the door remains wide open for RDJ’s Tony Stark to grace another MCU adventure.
While Downey appeared to have moved on from the Iron Man mantle, he never firmly closed the door on the character’s return. In a 2020 interview with Joe Rogan, he hinted at the possibility, stating that it would require a “super compelling argument” and the right creative vision to lure him back.
“There would have to be a super compelling argument and a series of events that made it obvious. But the other thing is, I wanna do other stuff,” Downey remarked.
After his standout role in this year’s hit film “Oppenheimer,” Downey is gearing up for his next project, an upcoming black comedy series titled “The Sympathizer,” currently in development at HBO. Iron Man or not, it seems RDJ is set to keep us entertained!
