Randy Couture is widely regarded as one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time. During his tenure with the UFC, Couture dominated the company’s heavyweight as its reigning champion. However, things turned sour between Couture and the UFC in 2007 and he departed the company while still the Heavyweight Champion.
Since then, Couture moved on to become a coach and even signed with Bellator to be a coach in the first season of their reality show Fight Master: Bellator MMA. Currently, Couture is signed to the Professional Fighters League as a broadcaster.
The PFL came under scrutiny earlier this year after ten of its fighters failed their drug tests during the first three regular-season events in Las Vegas in April. This resulted in the PFL to partner with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.
During a recent media scrum at Xtreme Couture, the former UFC fighter said that the test results didn’t sit right with him.
“I mean, those shows, the three shows we did here in Vegas were great shows. There were some great fights on those cards, very exciting. I thought the season was off and running. And obviously, to have the tests go the way they did, that certainly didn’t sit well. Something stunk to me, and that’s just my opinion.”
Couture further implied that Dana White may have had something to do with the sudden string of failed drug tests.
“How many seasons have we done now and not had a single positive test? And then we come to Vegas for three shows and we have 10? Something’s not quite right there in my opinion. But who knows? And Dana (White’s) comment about that was telling in my mind, too. ‘I bet they don’t come back to Vegas.’ So who knows? But yeah, that’s unfortunate, and obviously we pivoted, we plugged in some holes. It’s been an amazing season.”
It remains to be seen if Dana White will comment on Randy Couture’s suspicions going forward. It will also be interesting to see if more fighters test positive under this new partnership with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.
