Matthew Perry’s cause of death remains shrouded in mystery, adding another layer of intrigue to the beloved actor’s passing.
According to The Blast, Perry’s death certificate cites the cause of death as ‘deferred,’ pending further investigation and toxicology reports.
The “Friends” star’s untimely demise occurred on October 28 when he was tragically discovered drowned in his jacuzzi at the age of 54.
The document highlights Perry’s remarkable 38-year career in the entertainment industry and identifies his famous step-father, Keith Morrison, as the informant regarding his death. It also confirms that Perry was laid to rest at Forest Lawn in Los Angeles.
In the weeks leading up to his passing, Perry had been found lifeless by his assistant at his Los Angeles residence, following a two-hour pickleball game—a poignant final memory. Authorities quickly ruled out foul play and the presence of narcotics.
While Perry had publicly battled substance and alcohol abuse, he had claimed to be sober before his death, with close sources affirming his sobriety posthumously. However, prescription anti-depressants, anti-anxiety medications, and a COPD drug were discovered at the scene. The exact role of these medications in Perry’s death remains unconfirmed.
An autopsy was promptly scheduled, and the cause of death was marked as ‘deferred’ until a toxicology report could shed light on the circumstances.
In the wake of Perry’s tragic loss, his family released a heartrending statement, saying, “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother. Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend.”
The main cast members of “Friends”—Lisa Kudrow, Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Courteney Cox, and Matt LeBlanc—also shared their grief in a joint statement, expressing, “We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family. There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss.”
Perry was laid to rest six days after his passing at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills, in an intimate memorial attended by family and close friends. His “Friends” co-stars, except for LeBlanc, were seen together, somberly making their way to the apparent funeral.
The location of Perry’s final resting place, across from Warner Bros. studios where “Friends” was filmed, holds deep sentimental value. Forest Lawn Memorial Park is also the eternal home of other industry luminaries like Michael Jackson, Carrie Fisher, and Paul Walker.
As Perry once said while promoting his best-selling memoir, “I would like to be remembered as a guy who lived life, loved well, lived well, and helped people. That running into me was a good thing and not something bad.”
Rest in peace, Matthew Perry.
