Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, stars of separate ‘Karate Kid’ films spanning decades, are set to join forces in a new movie within the martial arts franchise. The two would make the announcement in a YouTube video. Obviously, this kind of news essentially broke the internet for good reason.
Produced by Sony Pictures and helmed by director Jonathan Entwistle, with a screenplay by Rob Lieber, the film is scheduled to premiere in theaters on December 13, 2024. The project, whose plot details are sparse, brings Macchio back to reprise his iconic role as Daniel LaRusso from the original “Karate Kid” film trilogy that commenced in 1984 and saw a revival on Netflix’s “Cobra Kai” series.
Jackie Chan, known for his role as Mr. Han, will also make a return. His character previously coached Jaden Smith’s Dre Parker in the 2010 remake of “Karate Kid.” While details about the new movie’s storyline remain undisclosed, the return of these familiar characters promises a ton of nostalgia for fans, among other things.
Chan and Macchio launched a global casting search for a brand new karate kid to lead the movie, inviting young actors to submit audition tapes to KarateKidCasting.com. We’ll have to wait and see how the new film will turn out next year.
