Netflix has dropped the official trailer for “Society of the Snow,” the highly anticipated film directed by J.A. Bayona. The movie, which has generated considerable buzz, has been selected as Spain’s submission for the 2024 Oscars.
“Society of the Snow” tells the gripping true story of the Uruguayan rugby team’s harrowing ordeal when their plane, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, crashed in the Andes Mountains en route to a match in Chile during the 1970s. Stranded in the frozen wilderness, the survivors faced extreme conditions and were forced to make unimaginable choices to endure hunger and hypothermia.
The narrative draws inspiration from the account detailed in Uruguayan journalist and author Pablo Vierci’s novel, “La sociedad de la nieve.” Unlike the 1993 film adaptation, “Alive,” which glossed over certain aspects of the survivors’ experience, “Society of the Snow” aims to present a grittier and more psychologically complex depiction of their ordeal.
Directed by J.A. Bayona, known for his work on “The Orphanage,” “The Impossible,” and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” the film is produced by Belén Atienza, Sandra Hermida, and J.A. Bayona. The cast includes Enzo Vogrincic, Matías Recalt, Agustín Pardella, Esteban Kukuriczka, and Tomas Wolf. The screenplay is penned by J.A. Bayona, Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques, and Nicolás Casariego, based on Pablo Vierci’s novel.
“Society of the Snow” is set to hit select cinemas in December before arriving on Netflix on January 4th, 2024. With its powerful storytelling and the promise of a more authentic portrayal of the survivors’ journey, the film has already garnered significant attention as a potential contender for the 2024 Oscars. Fans and film enthusiasts can now catch a glimpse of this compelling story in the official trailer.
