The Cleveland Browns are mourning the passing of Jim Donovan, their iconic play-by-play announcer, who passed away at the age of 68 after a battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. The Browns announced the tragic news on Saturday, with owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam calling it an “incredibly difficult day” for the entire organization.
Donovan became known as the “Voice of the Cleveland Browns” when the team rejoined the NFL in 1999 and served in the role for 25 seasons. Throughout the team’s struggles on the field, Donovan remained a consistent beacon of optimism and passion, embodying the spirit of Cleveland sports.
He was first diagnosed with leukemia in 2000, battling the disease for years and undergoing a bone marrow transplant in 2011. Despite his resilience, the cancer returned in May 2023, forcing him to step away from the microphone before the start of the 2024 season to focus on his health.
In addition to his work with the Browns, Donovan spent 39 years as a sports anchor for WKYC, retiring in May 2024 and making his final appearance a month later. Just this past September, Donovan was honored by the Browns, being inducted into the 2024 Class of Browns Legends.
The Haslams paid tribute to Donovan in a heartfelt statement: “His impact as the Voice of the Browns for 25 years is immeasurable as he touched the lives of our fans each and every Sunday with his love for the Browns and his brilliance at his craft. He will be greatly missed, but he cemented a legacy that will live on forever. The only thing that outweighed his love for this city and this team was the love he had for his family.”
Donovan is survived by his wife, Cheryl, and daughter, Meghan. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Cheryl, his daughter, Meghan, and everyone who was fortunate enough to call Jimmy family or friend,” the Haslams added.
Jim Donovan’s career with the Browns spanned decades of unforgettable moments, and his voice will forever be etched in the memories of Browns fans.
Rest in peace, Jim Donovan.
