Robert Whittaker’s quick tap-out at UFC 308 is starting to make a lot more sense after a shocking photograph surfaced showing the gruesome injuries he sustained during the fight.

In a photo shared by Daniel Cormier on the ESPN MMA broadcast, Whittaker’s front bottom teeth appear to have been pushed backward toward his throat, with his mouth visibly filled with blood.

The damage was inflicted during Whittaker’s first-round submission loss to Khamzat Chimaev in the co-main event at Etihad Arena on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. Chimaev wasted no time, dragging Whittaker to the ground early and applying relentless pressure.

At 3:34 of Round 1, Chimaev locked in a face crank, forcing Whittaker to tap out quickly. While the fight ended in just over three minutes, the physical toll on Whittaker was severe, with the jaw injury contributing to the fast submission.
