Solange Knowles has publicly shared her struggles with chronic health conditions, revealing that she was diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), Sjögren’s syndrome, and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) in 2018. Her heartfelt revelation came in the comment section of Shaun Ross’ Instagram post on October 14, where the model and musician discussed his own battle with POTS.

“Sending u so much love and strength Shaun and to all in the comments struggling with the debilitating, confusing, and lonely symptoms of POTS!” Solange wrote. “I got diagnosed with POTS, Sjögrens, and MCAS in 2018 and really relate to not wanting your health to be your identity.”

Solange also gave credit to Dysautonomia International, a non-profit that provides support for those with autonomic nervous system disorders. “The good folks at @dysautonomiaintl were really an incredible resource for me, and I feel really grateful for the spoonie community for holding me down during my times of complete uncertainty!” she added. “Sending an abundance of love your way!”

What Are POTS, Sjögren’s Syndrome, and MCAS?

According to the Mayo Clinic, POTS impacts the autonomic nervous system, which regulates involuntary body functions such as heart rate and blood pressure. In people with POTS, the body struggles to direct blood flow properly, causing symptoms like dizziness, fainting, and rapid heart rate.

Sjögren’s syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks the glands responsible for producing moisture, leading to dryness in the eyes, mouth, and other parts of the body.

Meanwhile, MCAS causes repeated anaphylactic episodes with symptoms like hives, swelling, breathing difficulties, and diarrhea due to the overactivation of mast cells, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology.
